MOSS Gathers no Rolling Stones

To Migrate or not To Migrate, What is the Process

Migrate SPS 2003 to MOSS 2007?

I found the consideration(s) of SharePoint migration almost overwhelming at first. It's not without some whelming even after examining all the potential paths and having decided on one.

This part of my adventure, though difficult, actually helped me to understand the ins and outs of SharePoint. The guts of it all. The inner workings. How this piece works with that piece. How this process depends on that process. I would recommend this learning method to anyone who is planing to become a SharePoint administrator.

Which path did we choose?

None.

After studying, implementing, testing and evaluating each path, we always found problems. Some created more work than we started with.

I saw this as a catalyst to moving the thinking in our case to a clean site rebuild. The curent implementation of SPS 2003 was a mess. Sub sites were used instead of pages, document libraries were fragmented creating dozens of libraries where one would have been better, business rules were not considered when creating publishing areas, etc... The list goes on for days.

So, long story short. We are building a brand spanking new MOSS 2007 implementation on a new Windows 2008 server with no predisposition to mirror the existing site. Okay, I got carried away there. Yes, there is that typical group who wants the new site to look and function exactly like the old one. Oh Lord! We can't move the sacred cheese!

That's actually okay with me. The surface is of no matter. It's the guts that count.
