Another flavor of Event 6482 solved

Event ID 6482 has several associated variations. Here is one that was new to me:

Log Name:      Application
Source:        Office SharePoint Server
Date:          2/1/2010 10:03:16 AM
Event ID:      6482
Task Category: Office Server Shared Services
Level:         Error
Keywords:      Classic
User:          N/A
Computer:      xxx.xxx.org
Description:
Application Server Administration job failed for service instance Microsoft.Office.Server.Search.Administration.SearchServiceInstance (8b284235-8eeb-4fa4-92a8-fbbae8a87b67).

Reason: Logon failure: the user has not been granted the requested logon type at this computer

Techinal Support Details:
System.ComponentModel.Win32Exception: Logon failure: the user has not been granted the requested logon type at this computer
   at Microsoft.Office.Server.Search.Administration.SearchServiceInstance.SynchronizeDefaultContentSource(IDictionary applications)
   at Microsoft.Office.Server.Search.Administration.SearchServiceInstance.Synchronize()
   at Microsoft.Office.Server.Administration.ApplicationServerJob.ProvisionLocalSharedServiceInstances(Boolean isAdministrationServiceJob)

At first it seemed like SharePoint could not remember the farmservice credentials for more that a day because every day I could run the stsadm commands to update the farmservice credentials and the error would stop, until the next day. Finally I realized that the farmservice logon account had been changed at some point in time and permissions were  not quite right for the new account. I had to grant it the right to log onto the computer as a service and then the error stopped for good.See the image below which shows where to find this permission (control panel / admin tools / local security policy / user rights assignment / log on as a service)

Cheers!
